Calculator assumption: each day for which sick pay is paid takes one day off the balance, and an unpaid day does not. Check your payslip to see how your employer actually tracks the balance. The daily wage comes from the figures you enter; there is more than one accepted way to work out a daily wage for a monthly-salaried employee. A collective agreement, extension order or personal contract may give more. This is general information, not legal advice.

How it works

Sick pay under the Sick Pay Law

Accrual: 1.5 days a month, up to 90

For each full month of work the employee accrues 1.5 sick days, which is 18 days a year. Unused days keep accumulating, up to a maximum of 90 days. Days accrue with the current employer.

Pay depends on the day of illness

The count starts on the first day of illness. Under the law, the first day is unpaid, the second and third days are paid at 50% of the daily wage, and from the fourth day on at 100%. Pay is due only while there are accrued days, and subject to a medical certificate.

Better agreements

The law sets only the minimum. Many collective agreements, extension orders and personal contracts pay from the first day or at a higher rate. In the calculator you can choose "100% from day 1" to see the difference.

The daily wage

For an hourly employee the daily wage is the hourly wage times the regular working hours per day. For a monthly-salaried employee the calculator divides the salary by the number of working days you enter for that month. In practice there is more than one accepted way to do this, so check against the payslip. For a part-time employee, also check the job percentage.

What the calculator does not cover

Sick days for a child's, spouse's or parent's illness, absence due to a work accident, and special rules in certain industries are not calculated here.

In RayClock the employee submits an absence request from the app, attaches a medical certificate and sees their balance. Sick days go into the payroll export from a locked month.
